Over 100 local businesses had the opportunity to pitch for work from Stockport's public sector organisations at the Council's third Meet the Buyer event, and Pure 107.8FM were there meeting local businesses.
The event, organised as part of the Stockport Boost campaign, proved popular with over 270 one-to-one appointments taking place, allowing local businesses to sell their goods and services to public sector buyers.
The way local authorities buy goods and services can have a major impact on the local economy and Stockport Council and its partners are keen to make the most of this to support local business.
Councillor Dave Goddard, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "The third Meet the Buyer event has proved a great success. Since 2003 the percentage of the Council's goods and services supplied locally has increased from 17% to 36%. And we are always looking at ways we can improve this even further.

Proud of Stockport

Citizen Awards 2010 Rewarding and Recognising Stockport's Extraordinary Citizens

The Proud of Stockport Awards is now in its third year, of celebrating extraordinary and exceptional people doing great things to help their local communities. The Awards are a celebration for Stockport's special citizens who go the extra mile to make Stockport a special place.

This year's awards were held at Stockport Town Hall, on Thursday 11th Feb, and guests were treated to some superb musical entertainment from the choir at St. James? Catholic High School in Cheadle Hulme, with Jim Hancock hosting the evening.

The awards have been publicised through local papers and on Pure 107.8FM, with dozens of nominations being made across a wide variety of different categories. The panel of judges had a hard time looking through all the nominations and had to choose only one winner for each category who they felt best demonstrated the qualities that make us proud of Stockport.

The winners of this year Proud of Stockport Awards 2010 were:

Ambassador for Stockport - John and Ann Hearle

Sponsored by Pure 107.8FM

Professor John Hearle and his wife, Ann, are Stockport's Ambassadors for 2010 because they put the borough on the map through their work in archaeological circles.

Professor and Mrs Hearle founded the Mellor Archaeological Trust. Professor Hearle has recently been awarded the MBE after more than a decade's tireless work for an archaeological dig. Professor Hearle says that his most important task is fundraising. Among his fundraising successes he secured a £450,000 Heritage Lottery grant over three years from 2007.

Nominator Peter Forbes from Stawberry Hill, Marple said "By bringing a wide circle of people from all walks of life to understand and appreciate the ancient heritage of this part of Stockport, they have enriched many lives"

Liz Attenborough Radio Sales & Promotions Manager from Pure 107.8FM added "We are a community radio station and we value everyone that adds to their local community. Mellor Archaeological Trust does great work and we think John and Ann Hearle play a leading role in that."
